This was one of the earliest independent self-designed projects in my career. I built the shop with 95% salvaged and local materials: three sheets of plywood, three 2x6s, the foundation blocks, and assorted hardware are the only new materials used, with the rest being either recycled materials, or purchased from a local sawmill. The materials guided the result on this project: the height of an old cedar playground determined quite a bit about the finished result. The building is designed to be level with the road, providing access from both the street and the yard. The drawbridge to the road is currently on the backburner. The elevation also allows for storage underneath, specifically designed for my tandem tricycle. The foundation design allows the structure to be re-leveled as the ground shifts, enabling a minimal impact on site. Designed with two lofts and an open middle bay, a block and tackle hoist allows heavy items to be stored above. The roofline and siding match another buildings on the lot, letting the structure mesh perfectly with the surrounding neighborhood. Though I've gained a great deal of skill since this project, I remain proud of this practical and sustainable structure.Â
